Following on from yesterdays post, today is of course the 30th anniversary of the start of the Falklands War, in which some 900 men of both sides lost their lives.
As a child, it was the first 'Real' war I witnessed; prior to that I was familiar with World War Two and Empire's past glories filtered through the cathode ray tube in the corner of our living room, or the Battle magazines so readily available. This was immediate and personal, real. By no means a certain outcome, grim and heroic in turns.
But also like so many wars, avoidable.

A complicated war that reinforced, to me at least, that Britain continues to respect her imperial obligations and continues to try to wind down that empire in a responsible and as peaceful as possible manner.
ReplyDeleteThere is a deeper subtext on empire brought up by this modern age conflict. Had it turned into a drawn out conflict Britain was not alone. There were people willing to answer a call that by rights should have been last heard and heeded by their grandfathers. But this particular topic is one of those best discussed over beer.
